The Kalashnikov USA KR-9 is a neat little 9mm PCC or PDW. The “R” in “KR” means Rifle. The weapon system subject is a factory K-USA KR-9 SBR 9mm. KR-9 sling setups are identical to a “Krink” Krinkov type Kalash weapon system. Like all other Kalash type weapon systems, we always advocate for a 2-point sling. There is not a specific AK sling to run, any 2-point rifle sling will do. For the sake of this article, we will be referring to the sling system as a KR-9 sling. The rest of the publication will include examples of our ANR Design The Link rifle sling (https://www.anrkydexholsters.com/product/the-link-anr-sling/).
KR-9 Front Mounting Solutions
The Blue Force Gear Sling U-Loop has been the gold standard for attaching a sling to the front of the factory handguard AK sling loop. The U-Loop (https://www.blueforcegear.com/uloop) has a a ball and socket style attachment of the cable loop. It is coated with a high heat elastomer that can handle some VERY hot sling loops. We have observed the plastic portion of the U-Loop to get pretty chewed up, but never failed on us personally. The loose end of The Link rifle sling is looped through the U-Loop, and double backed trough the Tri-Glides forward towards the muzzle of the gun. This is our favorite and most secure way to mount a sling to a classic AK-47 sling loop, in this case, a KR-9 sling loop.
KR-9 Sling Mounting to a Triangle Folding Stock
The factory SBR version of the Kalashnikov USA KR-9 comes with a classic triangle folding stock. It is a bit shoddy. It has weak welds and thinner sheet metal than a true Vityaz triangle folding stock. There is some twist to the metal and the stock nipple that retains the stock against the side of the weapon doesn’t do a great job holding the stock in place. For this reason, you won’t see us running the KR-9 folded much. The KR-9 sling, or in this case, The Link rifle sling is looped through the triangle folding stock factory sling swivel and secured with a double backed loop through the Tri-Glide toward the receiver.
KR-9 Sling Storage on the Weapon System
Since the triangle folding stock on the KR-9 doesn’t secure folded that well, we decided to abut a NeoMag Sentry Strap (https://www.anrkydexholsters.com/product/sentry-strap-by-neomag/) to the triangle folding stock the capture The Link rifle sling (https://www.anrkydexholsters.com/product/the-link-anr-sling/). If you look at the above picture, the NeoMag Sentry Strap has been shortened by a half inch so the Velcro Hook section isn’t hanging off the the smaller profile of the AK side folding triangle stock. This will prevent snagging things during use and operation of the KR-9 sling.
In Closing
The KR-9 “Vityaz” 9mm AK is a rad little weapon system. We hope this short tutorial on sling mounting helps you get your KR-9 sling or KP-9 sling with triangle folding brace up and running! Don’t hesitate to mount full size rifle slings to your PCC or SMG type rifle systems. Get all the successes and usefulness from the 2-point KR-9 sling and run that gun to it’s fullest potential.
